Thomas FITCH Sr.
William FITCH - William was born about 1400 in County Essex, England, some fifty miles due north of London. He is listed in a court record in 1428 as William Fecche and in 1435 as William Ficche and in 1436 as William Fycche. He lived in Bonhunt, later called Wicken Bonhunt when the two manors were combined into a town. He died in early 1466 and he left the two acres he owned to his son and heir John Fytche.
John FITCH - 1435 Fitche Castle, Widdington, Essex, England - In 1467, John was referred to as being `thirty years and more.' This would place his birth in the early to mid 1430s. He would have been born in Wicken, Essex.
He was married in the early 1460s and his wife was named Juliana. His son, Thomas was born in 1465, so he was married at least before that time.

Adam Fikes, was born in Stark, N.Y., April 30th, 1833, and was married in 1858 to Miss Amanda SHIMEL. They have three children. Raised in Stark where he lived all his life-except three years in Steuben county. He died in Stark in 1866, aged fifty-three years. He served in various town offices and was a Republican. He had three children and raised two; Jacob A. Fikes and Franklin Fikes. After his father's death he bought the homestead farm of 150 acres, to which he has since added fifty acres. He owns another of 135 acres and one of 120 acres. He was elected in 1871 supervisor and served two terms, was elected justice of the peace in 1880, in 1885 commissioner of highways and justice of the peace.

Margaret FIKES married Abram SHAVER, born in Stark, N.Y., July 30th, 1820, His father, Nicholas, was also a native of this town. Mr. SHAVER has held the office of constable for fifteen years, and was a musician in the old State militia for fifteen years.

FIKES, Jacob A., Stark, was born in Steuben county January 1, 1838 son of Adam and Catherine Conderman Fikes. The grandfather, Jacob, was born in Stark, and his father was born in Germany and settled in Stark before the Revolutionary War. Jacob was in the War of 1812 and was born in Stark. He was over seventy years old when he died. His wife was Elizabeth Miller and they raised eleven children; Michael, Peter, Adam, John, Jacob, James, Abram, who died young, Katie, Betsey, Clarinda, Mary A. and Margaret.

Adam Fikes was and resided here all his life, except three years when he lived in Fort Plain. He died January 1, 1881 leaving a wife and three children, Luella, deceased, Willard and Arthur. The wife of Adam was born in Stark, a daughter of Jacob and Katie Fort Shimel. The former was born in Jefferson county and died at Richfield in June 1800, aged ninety-two and his wife died aged seventy. They had ten children, nine survived; Lena, Ephraim, Louisa, Eli, Levi who died young, Almira, Amanda, Sylvester, Lucy and Amelia C. Willard Fikes was born where he now resides May 28, 1861. He was educated at district schools and after his father's death took charge of the farm, the fourth generation in possession of same. Arthur Fikes was born November 30, 1862, and married Carrie, daughter of William and Jennie Fikes Armstrong. They have one child, Howard J.

FIKES, Jacob A., is a native of Howard, Steuben county, N.Y., and was born January 1st, 1839. he was married December 24th, 1862, to Miss Mary PHILLIPS, of Warren, N.Y., who was born March 18th, 1839. They have one son. Mr. FIKES's father was born in Stark, N.Y., and married Elizabeth COUNTRYMAN. Mr. FIKES has served his town two terms as supervisor, and was elected justice of the peace in 1877. He is a farmer.

FIKES, Willard, born May 28, 1861. Stark, son of Adam H. and Amanda Shimel Fikes. His grandfather, Henry was a son of Adam Fikes who came to Stark and bought the farm where subject resides. His wife was a Miss Walts and they had four children; Christina, Adam H. Fikes, born in 1883, Menzo and Harvey. Menzo died young. He was educated at district schools and after his father's death took charge of the farm, the fourth generation in possession of same.

Palatine Bridge was settled in 1723.
A bridge across the Mohawk River here built in 1798 gave the community it name.
The village was incorporated in 1867.
Palatine The town was formed in 1788 from the "Palatine District" in the newly formed Montgomery County. In 1797, part of the town was used to form the Town of Salisbury . The population was 3,070 at the 2000 census. The named is derived from the Palatinate in the Rhineland, the homeland of the early settlers of this region. the town has a total area of 41.7 square miles, of which, 41.2 square miles (106.7 km²) of it is land and 0.5 square miles (1.3 km²) of it (1.25%) is water. The Mohawk River forms the south town line, and the north town line is the border of Fulton County, New York.

Big Nose -- A landmark at the town line in the southeast part of Palatine. Along with "Little Nose" on the opposite bank of the Mohawk River, it marks a place called "The Noses."
Christmans Corners -- A location in the north part of the town.
Cook Corners -- A hamlet south of Stone Arabia on Route 10 at the intersection with Dillenbeck Road.
Cranes Landing -- A former community in the western part of the town.
East Stone Arabia -- A hamlet east of Stone Arabia.
McKinley -- A location in the southeast part of the town.
Nelliston -- The Village of Nelliston is on the Mohawk River, opposite Fort Plain, New York.
Palatine Bridge -- The Village of Palatine Bridge on the Mohawk River, opposite Canajoharie, New York.
Palatine Church -- A former community in the northwest part of the town.
Stone Arabia -- A hamlet on Route 10, northeast of Palatine Bridge. Home to a large Amish community.

Christian Roof Jr, was born in Stone Arabia in 1767, Son Benjamin ROOF married Katherine Fikes, daughter of Henry FIKES and Marguerite HECK, Sons Alexander Roof on 7 Sept 1833 and Abram James Roof on 9 June 1837, other children

Benjamin ROOF was born in Minden, Montgomery County on 22 Feb 1807.
He married Katherine Fikes, born on 16 Sept 1814 in Herkimer County, dau of Henry FIKES and Marguerite HECK of Pamelia, before 1833. Their first two sons were both born in Jefferson County: Alexander Roof on 7 Sept 1833 in Pamelia and Abram James Roof on 9 June 1837. Children were born in Jefferson, Herkimer and Otsego Counties. Eventually settled in Delaware County. His father, Christian Roof Jr, was born in Stone Arabia in 1767. Other related families are DILLENBACH, BEEROP, and SCHITTERLY.

Dayton Armstrong, 78, died Aug 23 at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown following a brief illness. Burial in VanHornesville Cemetery. Born Dec 7, 1882 in Stark, the son of William and Emma (Fikes) Armstrong. He attended Rocks District School in the town of Stark. On Aug 26, 1906 he married Katie Palmer of Springfield Center in the Springfield Center Baptist Church. Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong always resided on their present farm.

Hello, I am Billy L. Fikes Jr., a descendant of George Fikes. I have been studying the Fikes line for many years and have assembled a great deal of data. I rather dislike data.

I much prefer looking over letters, diaries, news articles and old Family stories. So I am going to try and present here the Family line of George Fikes in a manner I have not seen as yet, and to that end I would request the aid of Fikes' everywhere. It is a large and amazing history we have behind us, and ahead of us. I am going to start with my direct linage and keep adding pages until I either get over it or the server space starts costing me too much.
